The New Word of Mouth: How to Get AI Assistants to Recommend Your Business
Last time we talked about the difference between Google and ChatGPT: Google hands you a list of links. ChatGPT just tells you who to call. That's a big shift — but understanding it doesn't get your business named. Here's what actually does.
1. Write like you're answering a question out loud
AI tools don't read your website the way people do. They grab little chunks — a question, then a short, direct answer. So write it that way: put the question in the heading, answer it in two or three sentences, then explain further if you want. Lead with the answer, not the windup.
2. Add schema markup — but know what it actually does
This is invisible code that tells AI tools what's on your page, instead of making them guess. It flags "this is an article," "this is an FAQ," "this is who wrote it." Worth knowing: a 2026 Ahrefs study tracking nearly 2,000 pages that added schema found it doesn't causally drive AI citations on its own — sites that already rank well for AI citations are about 3x more likely to have schema in place too, but adding it to an otherwise weak page won't move the needle by itself. It's still worth doing — it's what earns you rich results and keeps your content unambiguous to machines — just don't expect it to be a shortcut.
3. Get other people to talk about you
This is the part most businesses miss. Having a great page on your own site isn't enough — AI tools trust what other people say about you far more than what you say about yourself. Ahrefs' analysis of 75,000 brands found that earned mentions — press coverage, reviews, roundups — predict AI visibility three times more strongly than backlinks do. Separately, Muck Rack's Generative Pulse research, which analyzed over 25 million links cited across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, found that roughly 84% of AI citations trace back to earned coverage, not brand-owned content. So getting quoted, reviewed, or mentioned elsewhere isn't just good PR anymore — it's part of the strategy.
4. Write one quotable sentence
SEO rewards long, thorough pages. AI tools reward one clear sentence they can lift and repeat. If your best point is buried in paragraph six, it won't get used. Write the sentence you'd want ChatGPT to say about you, then build the page around it.
5. Keep it current and consistent
AI tools favor recent, agreed-upon information. If your pricing or facts are outdated — or contradict what's on your listings or elsewhere — the model loses confidence and won't cite you. Keep everything matching, everywhere.
None of this is complicated. It's just five things most businesses aren't doing yet. Every week you wait is a week your competitor could get there first.
