Quick answer: Make sure Gemini can reach your content, then be present in the sources it draws on: Google Search, your Google Business Profile if you serve local customers, YouTube, and the third-party sites that dominate its citations, such as Reddit. Google confirms Gemini grounds answers in Google Search and draws on public information from Google Maps and YouTube. Beyond that, independent studies, not Google, show what it tends to cite.

Ask Gemini to recommend a dentist, an accounting tool or a pair of running shoes, and it will answer with names. It speaks with the authority of the world’s largest search company, from inside products a vast audience already uses. Google said in August 2026 that more than a billion people use the Gemini app each month, a figure Bill Hartzer, who maintains an independent reference on AI search, notes is self-reported and unaudited. For a business, the question is no longer whether Gemini recommends anyone. It is whether it recommends you.
The advice on this topic is abundant and mostly unverified. Google has published remarkably little about how Gemini chooses what to recommend, and much of what circulates is inference presented as fact. So, as in our analyses of ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, this guide separates what Google has confirmed from what is assumed and then turns valid evidence into a real plan.
Confirmed: what Google has actually said
Google’s own documentation establishes four things.
Gemini uses Google Search. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice states that some Gemini responses are grounded on Search results.
It also draws on Maps and YouTube. Google’s help page on connected apps says Gemini automatically uses public information from Google Search, Google Maps, Flights, Hotels and YouTube. Search information is available even when a user is signed out. Maps and YouTube information requires the user’s activity setting to be on.
The model decides when to search, and writes its own queries. Google’s developer documentation explains that Gemini first judges whether a search would improve its answer, then generates and runs one or more searches of its own. This is documented for the developer API. That the consumer app works the same way is a reasonable inference, not a stated fact.
One robots.txt rule controls access. According to Google’s crawler documentation, the Google-Extended token governs whether your content can be used for Gemini training and for grounding in Gemini Apps. Blocking it does not affect your inclusion or ranking in Google Search.
That is essentially the whole of Google’s public guidance. As Hartzer points out, beyond being indexed and not blocking Google-Extended, Google documents no eligibility rule, no selection criteria and no reporting for Gemini. Everything else is observation.
Observed: what independent studies show Gemini tends to cite
Independent research fills the gap, with the usual caveat that observation is not proof of cause.
Community and video sources dominate. Across more than three million US queries tracked by Ahrefs’ Brand Radar in September 2026, Reddit accounted for 28.5% of the citations earned by Gemini’s 50 most-cited websites, YouTube for 14.6% and Wikipedia for 8.8%. Put simply: of every 100 citations that went to those top 50 sites, roughly 52 went to Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia combined, and the other 48 were spread across the remaining 47 sites. The figures cover only that top 50, so they show how concentrated Gemini’s favorite sources are, not what share of all its citations they hold.
For local questions, your own website and profile lead. In a study by Steady Demand, a local SEO firm, of 14,472 citations across 50 US metros, business websites made up 59.9% of Gemini’s citations, as reported by PinMeTo. Local Falcon, a local search vendor, reports that Gemini’s local answers draw location, reviews, hours and primary category from Google Business Profile and Maps. These figures reflect the study period; citation patterns in local search are shifting quickly, so re-test your own visibility every few months.
For products, retailers and earned media lead. Azoma, a vendor tracking Gemini shopping answers, reported a source mix in Q2 2026 of 41% retailers, 37% earned media, 15% brand websites and 7% user-generated content.
Gemini cites few sources per answer. In a Profound study reported by MentionsAPI, the Gemini app attached about 6.6 sources per answer, against 11.1 for AI Overviews and 15.2 for AI Mode. Fewer slots may mean fiercer competition for each one.

Assumed: four beliefs the evidence does not support
“If I rank first on Google, Gemini will recommend me.” In Geeky Tech’s study of 1,226 questions, Gemini cited just 21.0% of the domains ranking in Google’s top three. Gemini searches Google’s index, but it chooses on its own terms.
“One check tells me where I stand.” In Steady Demand’s local study, Gemini’s sources for an identical question overlapped only 46.3% of the time when asked back-to-back, and 26.5% the next day. It named the same top business on only about 7.9% of repeat queries. A study of 8,609 responses by Cassie Wilson Clark and Joao da Silva, published in September 2026, also found that what an AI knows about the user can change which brands ChatGPT and Gemini recommend. What you see in your own account is one sample, not the market’s view.
“FAQ schema boosts Gemini citations by 112%.” Hartzer traces this widely repeated figure to a single agency study of 1,000 queries from late 2024 and early 2025. Its own authors called it correlational, it had no control group, and it predates the current Gemini models.
“Blocking Google-Extended removes me from Google’s AI answers.” It removes you from Gemini’s grounding, not from AI Overviews or AI Mode, which Google treats as features of Search. Publishers who block it to leave AI Overviews stay in AI Overviews and vanish from Gemini instead.
The plan: how to get Gemini to recommend your business
What follows applies the evidence above. Each step says what it rests on.
1. Check that Gemini is allowed to use your content
Visit yoursite.com/robots.txt. If you see "User-agent: Google-Extended" followed by "Disallow: /", Gemini cannot ground answers in your pages. This is the only access control Google documents for Gemini, so check it before anything else. Our guide The Bouncer at the Door explains the wider checks.
2. Confirm Google has indexed your key pages
Gemini grounds its answers in Google's Search index, so a page Google hasn't indexed cannot be used. In Google Search Console, use URL Inspection on your most important pages.
3. If you serve local customers, treat your Google Business Profile as your storefront for AI
Google confirms Gemini draws on public Maps information, and Local Falcon reports that Gemini's local answers pull location, reviews, hours and category from your profile. Make sure your primary category, hours, address, services and photos are accurate and complete, and keep reviews coming in.
4. Build pages that answer specific questions
Because Gemini writes its own search queries, pages that answer precise questions give it more ways to find you. Title each page as the question your customers ask, and answer it in the opening lines.
5. Be present where Gemini looks
For most categories, that means genuine participation in relevant Reddit discussions, adding value rather than treating Reddit as a distribution channel, and a presence on YouTube, the two most-cited sources in Ahrefs' data. Google also confirms Gemini draws on public YouTube information.
If you sell products: prioritize accurate listings with the retailers you sell through and coverage in respected review publications, which together made up most of Gemini's shopping sources in Azoma's analysis. Keep your Google Merchant Center listings active and accurate too. Google says Gemini's shopping features are powered by its Shopping Graph, and Merchant Center is how merchants supply product data to it, according to shopping-feed vendors such as Paz.
6. Measure by asking, and asking again
No Google dashboard reports Gemini citations. Search Console's Generative AI report covers only AI Overviews and AI Mode. Ask Gemini the questions your customers ask, signed out as well as signed in, on several different days, and record who it names and which sources it cites. Visits that do arrive from the Gemini app typically appear in analytics with a gemini.google.com referrer.
Keep a simple log, with one row per check:
Date
Question asked, word for word, so you can repeat it exactly
Signed in or signed out
Location, if you serve local customers
Businesses named, including your competitors
Sources cited
Were you named? Were you cited?
Track those last two separately: Gemini can name you without linking to you. Over a few weeks, the log shows a pattern that no single check can.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get Gemini to recommend my business?
Make sure Gemini can access your site, then build presence where it looks. Google confirms Gemini draws on Google Search, Maps and YouTube. Independent studies show it cites Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia heavily, and that for local questions it leans on business websites and Google Business Profile information.
Why doesn't Gemini mention my business?
Start with access. If your robots.txt blocks Google-Extended, Gemini cannot use your pages. If access is fine, other possible explanations are that your pages aren't indexed, or that your business is absent from the third-party sources Gemini cites. Remember that its answers vary from query to query, so a single absence is not a verdict.
Does Gemini use my Google Business Profile?
Google confirms Gemini can draw on public information from Google Maps. Local Falcon reports that Gemini's local recommendations pull location, reviews, hours and category from Business Profile and Maps data, so an accurate, complete profile matters.
Does ranking first on Google mean Gemini will recommend me?
No. In one study of 1,226 questions, Gemini cited only 21.0% of the domains ranking in Google's top three results.
Can I see Gemini recommendations in Google Search Console?
No. Search Console's Generative AI report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode only. The practical alternatives are repeated manual checks and watching your analytics for gemini.google.com referrals.
